Measure ring size without a ring sizer – easy & discreet

Knowing the correct ring size provides security.

Whether the ring is a gift, a loving surprise, or for yourself – if it fits harmoniously, everything feels right.

Sometimes you want to ask directly.
But sometimes the moment should remain a true surprise.

Fortunately, there are several simple ways to reliably determine the ring size even without a professional ring sizer.

1. Measure an existing ring

The most precise method is using a ring that already fits well.

Place it flat on a ruler and measure the inner diameter in millimeters. It is important to measure only the inner edge.

Here's a guide with US and EU sizes:

Inner Diameter (mm)
US Size
EU Size
16.1 mm US 5.5 EU 50
16.5 mm US 6 EU 52
16.9 mm US 6.5 EU 53
17.3 mm US 7 EU 54
17.7 mm US 7.5 EU 55
18.1 mm US 8 EU 57
18.5 mm US 8.5 EU 58
19.0 mm US 9 EU 60

 2. Measure with thread or paper

If no suitable ring is available, a thin thread or a narrow strip of paper can help.

Wrap it loosely around your finger, mark the point where the ends meet, and then measure the length in millimeters. This corresponds to the finger circumference.

Finger circumference → US & EU Sizes

Finger Circumference (mm)
US Size
EU Size
50.6 mm US 5.5 EU 50
51.8 mm US 6 EU 52
53.1 mm US 6.5 EU 53
54.4 mm US 7 EU 54
55.7 mm US 7.5 EU 55
57.0 mm US 8 EU 57
58.3 mm US 8.5 EU 58
59.5 mm US 9 EU 60

EU sizes directly correspond to finger circumference in millimeters.
US sizes are based on their own measuring system and usually increase in half steps.

The thread should fit gently – not tight, not loose. A ring should feel natural.

 3. Use a well-fitting ring as a template

If the ring is meant to be a surprise, you can briefly borrow a well-fitting ring. Place it flat on paper, carefully trace the inner circle, and then measure the diameter of the drawing. This will give you a very reliable guide for the correct size.

Additional tips

  • Fingers are usually a little fuller in the evening than in the morning.
  • Temperature can slightly affect the circumference.
  • Wider rings fit a little tighter than narrow models.

If you are in between two sizes, it is better to choose one ring size larger. Many rings can also be finely adjusted.

When everything fits

A ring size is a number – but it determines how a ring feels.

Whether as a gift, a token of affection, or for a very personal moment: when a ring glides effortlessly onto the finger, it doesn't feel new – it feels just right.
