What are the 4 Cs of gemstones? Simply explained (Carat, Cut, Color, Clarity)

If you're buying an engagement ring or high-quality jewelry, you'll quickly come across the term "4 Cs".

But what do they really mean?
And do they only apply to diamonds – or also to moissanite and other gemstones?

Here's an easy-to-understand explanation.

What are the 4 Cs?

The 4 Cs stand for:

  1. Carat (Weight)
  2. Cut
  3. Color
  4. Clarity

These four criteria significantly determine the quality and price of a gemstone.

1. Carat – How big is the stone really?

Carat describes weight, not visible size.

1 Carat = 0.2 grams.

Important:
Two stones with the same carat weight can appear differently sized – depending on the cut.

Size alone says nothing about brilliance.

2. Cut – The most important factor for brilliance

The cut determines how light is reflected.

An excellent cut ensures that:

  • light enters optimally
  • is internally reflected
  • is returned as brilliance

Even a large stone will look dull if the cut is poor.

Therefore, cut is often more important than carat.

3. Color – How colorless is the stone?

For diamonds, the scale ranges from D (colorless) to Z (yellowish hue).

Colorless = rarer = more expensive.

For moissanite, color grades are also offered – from nearly colorless to slightly warm.

Important:
Minimally warmer tones are often barely perceptible to the naked eye.

4. Clarity – How pure is the gemstone?

Clarity describes inclusions or internal characteristics.

The scale ranges from:

  • IF (internally flawless)
    to
  • I (visible inclusions)

Many inclusions are only visible under magnification.

For everyday wear, what matters is whether the stone appears "eye-clean" – meaning it looks pure to the naked eye. Moissanite

Do the 4 Cs also apply to moissanite?

Yes – partly.

Moissanite is also graded by:

  • size
  • cut
  • color
  • clarity

is rated.

However, moissanite is naturally very clear and is usually offered in high clarity grades.

Therefore, cut and light performance play a particularly important role here.

What is more important than the 4 Cs?

The 4 Cs explain quality.

But they don't explain:

  • style
  • effect
  • personality
  • suitability for everyday wear

A technically perfect stone can appear unsuitable.
A slightly smaller stone with an excellent cut can look significantly higher quality.
